HIIT OR TIME UNDER TENSION? WHICH WORKOUT IS BETTER FOR YOU?
In the last few years HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout has become very popular as a main type of training for many men and women. It has been promoted as a training that gives us the fastest weight loss and fitness improvement. As a result, most people will just do this type of workout. We live fast and stressful life so saving time and effort sounds like a great plan.
Yet there are few facts we do have to take into consideration when planning our training:
1. Body adapts to every training. After approximately 3-4 months your body will start responding to the same type of workout and you will reach your plateau. If you continue doing the same workout you may even start putting on weight! As a result, you will continue to increase the time and frequency of your weekly sessions.
2. Training without adequate intensity and recovery between sets, will engage only your aerobic energy system, shifting the focus to improving your endurance
3. If you are a complete beginner, moving fast and without enough rest may lead to injuries
Don’t get me wrong, I love HIIT! It fills me up with a great energy, but I can tell when it stops challenging me enough and I have to change my focus for a couple of months.
So it is important to start with the training that will help you move better, keep the right alignment when you exercise, improve your posture and address any imbalances, I call it here the TRAINING UNDER TENSION (or mix these types of workouts).
You must learn how to move and how to control your body when you train before you start moving faster and jumping. Any training that will help you work on these weaker and often underestimated areas (like your back) will not only make you look and move better but will help you stay injury free. Moreover, it will help you build lean muscles which some call our body’s furnaces. That will increase your metabolism and help you use more energy (calories) every day, even when you are sitting.
To sum up: if you are a beginner, learn how to move and control your body before you hit your HIIT class! If you have been training for a long time now, add some TRAINING UNDER TENSION to your weekly routine and keep on getting results!
